Graduate Education and Research
2009-2010 Scholars' Community
Program Announcement

The Office of Graduate Education and Research is seeking nominations for the 2009-2010 GEAR Scholars' Community. The program is open to all pre-tenure EKU Faculty members. Nominations may come from Department Chairs or applicants may self nominate. The objectives of the Community are to foster the scholarly development of new faculty through development of insight into scholarly work, establishment of personal scholarship goals, selection and planning of scholarly projects over one and three year periods, and completion of a scholarly product within the academic year. Examples of the final product of participation in the GEAR Scholars' Community could be a publishable article or a competitive grant proposal.

The program consists of a series of workshops on scholarship held during the fall term. The program is competitive. Up to 10-15 candidates will be selected for participation. All candidates selected for the program and who agree to participate will be granted a one-course reduction in their teaching load for the spring 2010 semester. Funding for the course release will be provided by the Office of Graduate Education and Research.

Participation in the 2009-2010 GEAR Scholars' Community will include:

  • Approximately six two-and-a-half hour sessions, during Fall 2009, to facilitate scholarly development, goal setting, and planning;
  • a 3-credit course release in Spring 2010 to work on the selected scholarly product;
  • and presentation of the scholarly product to the Dean and Community in late Spring 2010.
Sessions will primarily be facilitated by Doris Pierce, EKU's Endowed Chair in Occupational Therapy and Jerry Pogatshnik, Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice President for Research.

Faculty members will be selected for participation in the 2009-2010 Scholars Community using the following criteria:

  • quality of the scholarly plan including detailed description of expected outcome (grant proposal, peer-reviewed article, etc.);
  • the faculty member's position as early in the tenure track progression (prefernce wil be given to faculty who have completed at least one academic year at EKU);
  • diversity in the make-up of the Scholars' Community across Colleges and Departments;
  • balance between projects for publication and grant proposals;
  • and constraints of scheduling.

Nominations are requested to be limited to a two-page responsive to the above. Nominations should be submitted to the Graduate School using the attached Nomination Form. All nominations must be received by May 1, 2009.
