NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Important Tuition Notice for 2009-2010

The Eastern Kentucky University Board of Regents approved three significant changes in the graduate tuition structure. The following changes are effective for Fall 2009:

Reduction in Out of State Tuition: The out of state tuition multiplier will be reduced from 2.8 times the in-state rate ($383 X 2.8) to 2.0 ($383 X 2).

Elimination of Targeted Tuition: EKU will no longer offer targeted tuition rates to graduate students. Students currently classified as targeted will be treated as out-of-state students and charged at 2 times the in state rate under the new structure.

All Tuition will be based on a Per Credit Hour Rate: Currently students who take more than 9 hours do not pay additional tuition for credits above 9 hours. Under the new plan, students will be charged tuition for all coursework.

Other Considerations:

In-state tuition will be assessed at $383/credit hour, an increase of 3.95% over the 08-09 year. The tuition for ALL non-residents will be $766/credit hour, a decrease of $244 from 08-09. All graduate students on assistantships will continue to be charged the in-state rate. We also anticipate a small increase in the graduate assistant stipend to partially offset the impact of the tuition increases.

Planning for 2009-2010

The greatest impact will be on those students currently classified as targeted who are not receiving any type of graduate assistantship. In fall 2008, less than 3.5% of graduate students were classified as targeted and the vast majority of those held some form of graduate assistantship. For those not on an assistantship, the changes will mean an increase of approximately $190/credit hour over the current rate. These students need to plan their budgets accordingly. They should also work with their programs to see if they may be eligible for support as a graduate assistant.

Other students affected are those who routinely take more than 9 hours/semester in their graduate program. The move to a per credit hour model more accurately reflects the costs that must be borne by the institution in offering our graduate programs. Students in programs that typically enroll in more than 9 hours/term will need to carefully plan their budgets for next year to accommodate the move to a per credit hour tuition basis.
